Happy Constitution Day!

September 17th, 2018

USF Votes LogoIn honor of Constitution Day, we are celebrating voting rights at Gleeson Library. Come visit our display near the entrance to Thacher Gallery where we have books from our collection on the history of voting rights and voter engagement in the United States. While you’re here, pick-up a pocket constitution, a Ben Franklin tattoo, and get information on where to register to vote. Or just click here to register to vote!

“Constitution Day celebrates the ratification of the U.S. Constitution on September 17, 1787. On this day, 231 years ago, the delegates to the Constitutional Convention gathered in Philadelphia, PA to sign this landmark document. The Constitution established our national government and fundamental laws, and continues to guarantee basic rights for U.S. citizens. The Bill of Rights became part of the U.S. Constitution in 1791.

Zine Making Workshop

September 10th, 2018

Join us for a Zine Making Workshop!

Thursday 9/13/2018 11:00-2:00 Gleeson Library second floor

Come when you can but only leave when you absolutely have to.

Zines are short-run, independently published magazines on a variety of subjects. Common themes include art, comics, poetry, short stories, memoirs, cultural criticism, and social commentary. Zines are an important medium for self-expression in our culture. They can give voice to those whose voices have been marginalized and start conversations on topics that are not in the mainstream. They can also just be a lot of fun to make.

Photo of the Gleeson Zine Library with Photocopier in the backgroundThe Gleeson Zine Library is a small collection of zines that circulate to the University of San Francisco community. We have open zine making workshops and have had teachers bring in their classes. Students can contribute their work making the Gleeson Zine Library a reflection of our community.  The Gleeson Zine Library is in the large common room on the second floor of the Library.

National Read a Book Day!

September 6th, 2018

Here is a guest post from Jacqueline Cao, a student assistant in the Reference Department.

September 6th is is National Read A Book Day! Take those reading glasses out, a hot mug of tea or coffee, and find a cozy seat to settle down in.

Although there are a lot of national days, this one is meant for a special celebration here at Gleeson Library. We encourage all of you to enjoy the beauty of literature by setting some time aside to read. After all, we have thousands of books for you to choose from; whether it is a graphic novel, non-fiction book, or even a periodical. I’m sure that there’s a book out there for you! Check out this list of top 100 books everyone should read, or even navigate our own library’s catalog  Ignacio.

School and work can be time-consuming and stressful. We often don’t have time to read for leisure. However, National Read a Book Day gives you the perfect opportunity to remember to take some time off, relax, and indulge in a good old-fashioned book. Try to think of books as an inexpensive method of entertainment and/or education, or even a mini-escape from reality!

There are physical and mental benefits to reading too! They have the ability to improve one’s memory and concentration, and can aid in reducing stress. Check out 8 Science-Backed Reasons to Read a (Real) Book for more reasons to set some time aside and read.

In a world of chaos and disorder, National Read A Book Day reminds us to breathe, relax, and take some time to ourselves.
