USF Network Outages This Weekend (July 14)

July 13th, 2018

USF’s ITS department is planning to update a number of network services over the July 14th weekend. This work will cause intermittent outages to a significant number of online services.

Gleeson library systems that will encounter intermittent outages include:

If you return checked-out books over the weekend, there will be delays in updating your library record – but don’t worry, we’ll check-in everything you bring back on Saturday as soon as we can.

If you have any library-related questions feel free to get in touch via phone, email etc. Gleeson library be open Saturday July 14th 10AM – 6PM.

Beginning July 24, the Library will have a new way to login to online resources

July 11th, 2018

The Library is implementing a new authentication system called OpenAthens, which will go-live on Tuesday, July 24. OpenAthens is an identity and IP-based system that provides access to our licensed online resources (databases, ejournals, ebooks, and streaming video) using single sign-on technology. It provides a more secure and reliable experience for users. This solution should also resolve the “proxy error access issue many users have been encountering.

On July 24, the experience of accessing online resources will change:

  • All users will now need to sign-in via OpenAthens regardless of whether you are on-campus or off-campus.
  • Once logged in, sessions last up to 8 hours unless browser cookies and cache are cleared.
  • Please see the OpenAthens guide for more information on what to expect.

Access to online resources will be affected on the go-live date, Tuesday, July 24, and there may be intermittent downtime for the remainder of that week. We apologize in advance for this inconvenience. If you are unable to access a resource, ask a librarian.

As part of the implementation, we will gradually move library online resources from our previous authentication system, WAM, to OpenAthens. For those faculty, staff, and students that share permalinks to EBSCO/Fusion, ProQuest, or Gale resources in Canvas and elsewhere on the web, please search again for these resources and update your links by the start of the fall semester.

Eventually, all resources will be moved to OpenAthens. To avoid broken links, beginning December 1, 2018, please update all other permalinks by the start of the spring semester 2019. More information on linking to online resources is available on the OpenAthens guide.

Please contact eresources@usfca.edu if you have any questions or concerns.
