March 5th, 2009USF Student Government Presidential Elections
March 5th, 2009Currently elections are being held for the new President and Vice-President of USF’s Student Government.

Here is my take on each candidate group:
Christopher Cano and Jaime Lane
Clearly have some big goals that they wish to address but they are not clear enough in how they plan to implement it. I think it’s important when you’re deciding a candidate to know more than what they want to do, but how they want to it or as specific details as they can give you.
Christopher Leddy and Kayla Richmond
I’m not too sure about their campaign, their website really does not present too much information and I was not able to make it to any of their speeches on campus. Seems too vague and not thought out enough. I’m sure they have some big goals, but they should have went into more detail in an easily accessible place.
I met Robin personally at a VSA meeting last week and she presented lots of ideas on how her and her running mate would like to change things at the USF campus. Though heavily questioned, she was prepared to answer whatever questions people presented her with. Lots of their plans seem to not be too concrete though and their ideas are probably too ambitious. I do like that they really want to connect with the students and open doors to students and their opinions. They oppose implementing fees unless students are in support of new fees. I liked that point.
Juan Soltero and Bruno Portigliatti
A nice campaign name with plenty of backing by organizations and Greek Life. The campaign of Soltero and Portigliatti almost looks like a real presidential campaign, especially by the look of their website. A straw poll at school seems to favor them the most and they have lots of connections, offering free events, food, and various other goodies to people who will vote for them. Their website has some really in-depth information on how they plan to change the school down to who they will go to in order to bring about progress. They seem to support some fees, which personally I oppose since school is expensive enough, but as long as they keep the fees in moderation I wouldn’t oppose them too much.
Like any election it is important that you at least vote for who you like the most, even if you disagree with candidates themselves on small issues, pick the lesser evil as people say, though that does not really apply to college student government. Just remember the people you elect will be handling your money.
